Healthy Household

It’s been five days since Sam has been home and he continues to do great.  His cough is gone and the speed of his feedings are getting faster and faster.  And now that Max is over his cold and back home, we’re finally all back together!

It’s amazing how empty the house seemed.  But now that everyone is home, I love hearing baby noises coming from the other rooms as I work in my office during the day.  And at night I take time before going to sleep to hear the soft snores coming through the monitor in our room.  So nice.

Well, since it rained on Halloween, we all stayed in and handed out candy to the trick-or-treaters who braved the weather.  Saturday night was the first night that we were all home together, so it was nice to just hang out and work on getting everyone back in their routine.  This is easier said than done.  I’m sure all the veteran parents out there already knew this, but we found out Sunday morning that babies aren’t all that keen on daylight savings time.  Who knew?!  We had some cranky babies who didn’t know why we wouldn’t feed, bathe, and put them to bed when they were used to doing these things.  And no matter how much I tried to explain, they didn’t want to hear it.

But Sam’s recovery has been going pretty smoothly.  Laura’s Aunt Joan, who is a nurse, came into town and she’s been a tremendous help.  Sam is doing so much better since he’s left the hospital.  It’s pretty incredible how much being home in familiar surroundings seems to have helped.  Sam doesn’t give us the skunk eye any more and has been smiling and even laughing a lot.  He’s getting more exercise and has been using his jumpy quite a bit.  Today he went for his post-op visit with Dr. Kirshbom.  He was so happy to see how well Sam is doing.  The x-ray of his chest was completely clear, meaning the RSV has cleared up.  Also, Dr. Kirshbom took Sam off of two of his medications.  Go Sam.  And Max continues to grow and thrive.  He’s so close to crawling, but in the mean time he rolls everywhere he wants to go.  He’s also practicing eating “real” food, drinking from a sippy cup, and making lots of close-but-not-quite words.  I almost have him saying, “Uh-oh!”

This week Sam has an appointment with the G.I. doctor, and next week he’ll see a feeding therapist.  Hopefully soon we’ll be able to get him off his NG tube.  I’ll keep you posted!
